Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the World’s highest free-standing structure at an altitude of 5,896 meters (19,336 feet) above the sea level. Hiking on the rooftop of Africa is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone who is physically fit can scale this snow-capped mountain.
Mount Kilimanjaro is located inside the Kilimanjaro National Park outside of Moshi town in a beautiful accessible village of Marangu where the head-quarters of the park is located. There are different routes to the top involving different villages and scenarios. These routes include Marangu route, Machame route, Rongai route, Lemosho route, Umbwe route, Shira route and Mweka route which is used for descent only.
With all these routes to the top Mount Kilimanjaro is however not only the highest free-standing peak in the world but also highest accessible point. The Chagga who inhabit the area of the mountain hasn’t yet managed to give the meaning of Kilimanjaro with the exception of “Kipoo” (now known as Kibo) for the familiar snowy peak that stands imperious, overseer of the continent, and the summit of Africa.
The vegetation of Mount Kilimanjaro varies accordingly with the nature of the altitude you are, basically from tropics to the Arctic. At the level of 2700 m the cultivated foot slopes give way to lush mountain forest, inhabited by leopard, buffalo, elephant, antelope and other primates. As you ascend the moorland zone show up where a cover of giant heather is studded with other worldly giant lobelias. Above 3900m, the zone changes to alpine desert which support little life to the fauna and flora. Popular signboards of no water here are experienced in this zone as you trek Kilimanjaro. The final vegetation is of winter wonderland of ice and snow and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the Africa.
Unlike other snow caped Mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro is not a very technical climbing mountain and need less equipment on trekking. Walking stick, proper clothing, sun glass, enough drinking water and determination are the key to a successfully Kilimanjaro climber. A successfully climber is the one who prepare himself/herself properly before ascending and ask as many questions as they can during trekking as well as been attentive to the Kilimanjaro mountain guide.
The team which will take you to the mountain will comprise a cook(s), mountain guide and mountain porters. Depending on the nature of the group but a minimum of two porters per person carrying less than 15 kg of your luggage, cooking facilities and sleeping tents depending on the route selected. One guide for four to five people with one assistant guide and one cook. Additional of the team members will be done according to the situation of the group and luggage taken to the mountain.
While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro the Marangu route is referred as the luxurious route due to the fact that it has huts for accommodation, European toilets and sufficient water tape. Other Mount Kilimanjaro routes are subjected to the mobile camping tents whereby all the facilities are carried by your porters and in most cases they will trek faster than you for the preparation of accommodation, food and water on your arrival.
Mount Kilimanjaro can successfully attempt by eligible 12 years to 70 years people and this is what the authority advice the alpine. Different people from different countries have trek/climb Mount Kilimanjaro in different ways to make different records and you can read them on your arrival especially the Marangu and Machame gate.

MACAHAME ROUTE 6 DAYS
Day 1:
Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport. You will be met with your driver at the airport and transferred to your Hotel in Moshi for your overnight on bed& breakfast.
Day 2:
Your day starts early with a briefing, followed by breakfast and a 45-minute drive from Moshi (910m) to the Machame village (1.490m). The guides and porters prepare and pack the supplies and your equipment in the village. Depending on the condition of the road, it is possible to drive from the village to the Machame gate, but if not, the muddy 3 km walk will take about 1hour to complete. After registering at the gate office, you start your ascent and enter the rain forest. You will receive a lunch pack at the gate and you can also drink bottled water you bought at your Hotel in Moshi. There is possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. In the evening the porters will boil drinking and washing water and the cook will prepare dinner, before you retire to your tent for the night. Night temperatures can already drop to freezing point at Machame campsite.
Day 3:
You rise early at Machame camp and after breakfast you climb an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau. By now you will be able to see in an easterly direction, the Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. You are now due west of Kibo and after a short hike you will reach the Shira campsite at 3.840m. Porters will boil drinking and washing water, before serving dinner. The night at this exposed camp will even be colder than the previous night, with temperatures dropping to well below freezing.
Day 4:
The route now turns east into a semi desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, where you reach an altitude of 4.630m after about a 5hours walk. Lunch is served in a designated area before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower (4.630m); definitely the toughest day so far. It is normally around this point, where for the first time, some climbers will start to feel symptoms of breathlessness, irritability and headaches. After lunch you descent again by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area and after reaching the high altitude of 4.600m at Lava Tower, the true acclimatization benefit of this day becomes clear. This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for the preparation of your dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp site.
Day 5:
Totally exposed to the ever-present gales the tents are pitched on a narrow, stony, and dangerous ridge. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents. The summit is now a further 1.345m up and you will make the final ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit attempt. This should include the replacement of your headlamp and camera batteries and make sure you have a spare set available as well. To prevent freezing it will be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed at round about 07:00pm and try to get some precious rest and sleep for not more than 5hours.
Day 6:
You will rise around 11:30pm, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This 6hours walk to Stella point is for many climbers, mentally and physically the most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5.739m) you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point you will normally encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5.895m. The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your live. The walk back to Barafu from the summit, takes about 3hours. Here you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Mweka Camp (3.100m) for Dinner and Overnight.
Day 7:
: After Breakfast, From the Mweka Gate you will continue down into the Mweka village, normally a muddy and long hour walk. In the Mweka village, on the way to Moshi you will be served a delicious hot lunch!! You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, overnight in your Hotel. It is recommended and tips are highly appreciated at the end of their trip. Tips can be given to the guide at your Hotel. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5.739m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5.895m) receive gold certificates.

Do not pay tips on the mountain nor should you pay for any extra services while you are on the mountain other than for the purpose of refreshments
(only regularly available on the Marangu Route). It is also worth bearing in mind that items of clothing and footwear, for children or adults, used or new, are also highly valued and can be given as well as money tips.
